Northern Territory future leaders program

December 7th, 2011, ARTICLES, LEADERSHIP

We recently had the privilege of hosting four young indigenous leaders from the Marthakal Homelands Resource Centre, in the Yolngu region.

The group participated in a 7 day leadership and cultural program in Sydney which involved visiting a number of organisations, cultural centres and tourist spots. The purpose of the program was to provide clarity on ‘western leadership’ and to enable participants to experience how western business is conducted and the leadership style non-indigenous leaders use.

During the visit, we were also delighted to hear stories and learn about life from the group about indigenous leadership and how business is conducted in the remote Northern Territory community near Gove.

Although our cultures differ, there are certain leadership themes that are relevant to both indigenous and non- indigenous rituals, but the difference in how these are carried out is significantly different.  Some of the themes we talked about included:

  • Communication Skills
  • Building relationships and gaining trust
  • Problem solving and decision making skills
  • Developing others
  • Planning and organising

In particular we would like to thank the following organisations for their generous time and support:

  • Amaysim Australia Pty Ltd
  • Allens Arthur Robinson
  • Bangarra Dance Company
  • Royal Bank of Scotland
  • Spice Temple Restaurant
  • Sydney Cricket & Sports Ground Trust
